About
Mr Mukhtar Ahmad is a Consultant in general and colorectal surgery. He trained in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and various locations in the Northeast of England before joining Poole Hospital in 2013.
He specialises in the management of colorectal cancer, benign disorders of the colon, haemorrhoids and other anal conditions and pelvic floor surgery. He is an expert in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, hernia, gallstones and pelvic floor disorders.
He is currently the lead clinician for colorectal surgery at University Hospitals Dorset and has overseen the merger of the Poole and Bournemouth colorectal teams. In addition, he led the task group that oversaw the establishment of a Surgical Assessment Unit at Poole Hospital, which has improved the quality of care provided to acutely unwell surgical patients.
With his expertise in pelvic floor surgery, Mr Ahmad has organised courses to train aspiring surgeons and has published papers on this highly specialised area in peer-reviewed journals. Mr Mukhtar Ahmad received a Clinical Excellence Award in April 2017.
Mr Ahmad holds private clinics and operating sessions at The Harbour Hospital and provides consultations and treatments for patients with groin swelling, rectal bleeding, bowel incontinence, constipation, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, gallstones, haemorrhoids and various other bowel conditions.
Passionate about global surgery and improving patient safety in his country of origin, Nigeria and other Low and Middle Income Countries, Mr Ahmad is a trustee of two charities that help develop and sustain health partnerships between UK and African institutions, leveraging on the burgeoning African healthcare Diaspora. He also runs another charity, the Sahel Water Empowerment Initiative, which provides clean drinking water to disadvantaged communities in the Sahel region of Africa.
In his free time, Mr Ahmad enjoys reading biographies, cycling and working out at the gym, as well as spending time traveling and exploring nature with his wife and four children.
