What is it?
A robotic assisted hysterectomy is a hysterectomy with the assistance of advanced robot technology. It uses a laparoscopic approach which is minimally invasive with only small incisions. In a laparoscopic surgery, the procedure is performed manually by the surgeon. In a robot-assisted surgery, there is generally better visualisation and better range of movement of the tools. This can lead to less bleeding, greater surgical precision, shorter length of stay in hospital and fewer complications. A robot-assisted surgery tends to take longer than a standard laparoscopic procedure.
Why might you need it?
This option is often recommended for complex cases, including severe endometriosis or fibroid removal.
Are there different types?
Robotic technology can be used for total, subtotal, or radical hysterectomies.
Is it day-case surgery?
It may be possible for some cases to be day surgery, but most patients require an overnight stay.
